I was killing time having a beer up at the bar in a pub near Gatwick Airport. Two guys walked in, still dressed in their work overalls. After sharing a laugh with the barman, Mike came over, introduced himself and sat next to me. Before long, he was telling me about his job. He and Dave worked for a cleaning sub-contractor at the airport, where they were responsible for keeping two of the terminal halls spotless. They had a great boss, the company really looked after them, paid well and offered lots of perks…but above all he loved his work environment and the positive atmosphere around him.
However, whilst Mike was cheerfully chatting away with me, Dave was alone at the far end of the bar, staring despondently into his pint.
I asked Mike, “what’s up with him?”
“He hates his job”, Mike replied
“I don’t understand”, I said. “You work for the same company, you do exactly the same job, yet you love your job…and he hates his?”
Mike looked over his shoulder at Dave and explained. “I work in Arrivals…he works in Departures”
